Imagine for a moment that you really love purses. Being a well-bred person, properly schooled and being up to date on modern things, you always carry a nice purse. Your mom said that a nice purse brings everything together nicely, and speaks volumes about who you are.
Being the connoisseur of purses nothing excites you more than a well-stitched, well-made, quality purse. You take pride in the purses you carry around because they are fastidiously neat, classic, and very sturdy. You only carry quality purses because you have been brought up proper and are well groomed. You know that nicely made, properly handled and cared for purses last much longer and retain their elasticity for years.
Your dream purse would be something very original and yet very classic, nothing weird like gasp, cheap bleached denim, in a nice color. The zipper would be able to take years and years of abuse. The seams would never wear and the purse would never show its age.
And then, while you carry the classic purse, such as say, a supple caramel leather Liz Claiborne, you notice that Roxy in the next cube. Roxy seems pretty normal and fits in with the rest of you, until that is, you see her purse.
Roxys antique purse is gasp, a no name purse. Probably made by some starving artisan on mushroomssigh. It is an almost too tightly woven black yarn purse, almost lopsided, but charmingly so. It is about the size and shape of a bowling ball bag, and very cavernous inside. Roxy doesnt really have much of a choice about the purse; she just got stuck with it, through no fault of her own. Seems that Roxy is under the impression that she can never have a purse but this one, it is, after all, the only one she's ever had. When you compliment her on the quaint uniqueness of it, she sort of sighs and rolls her eyes before saying, It was the only colorful one..
This colorful purse has many uses, say one that doubles not only as a purse but also a hidden handy-dandy voice activated recorder, and maybe also a radio and there are speakers hidden inside so she can whip out the earphones when things get too crazy. Nothing like drowning out hysteria, she smiles.
It also has a secret compartment for well, anything secret.
Roxy has lots of secrets. It is actually just inside the purse and it zips open. Its just as large as a family bible. Roxy puts lots of secret things in there. Condoms. Aspirin. Pictures of her biological family. Her journal.
The poor zipper, its okay for now but starting to fray a bit around the edges. Roxy gets mad, because she gets compliments on her purse, but people dont know it gets stuck sometimes. It looks pretty normal, as far as zippers go but you dont spend too much time looking at it. Why? Because you cannot get over the black and white zebra stripe marabou feathers that border it. I cannot believe that Roxy doesnt zip her feathers up when she moves the zipper, but Roxy is very composed and is very good at operating that zipper. As far as comfort goes, Roxy always has a backache from carrying that heavy bag around. Others are a little jealous that Roxy has the moxy to be so original, but they dont know how heavy it is because she is always smiling. Secretly, Roxy hates the purse and wants to throw it in the Mississippi River, but shes worried shell never find one as unique as it again.
I am Roxy, and her purse is my past. This is the best I can explain it. People think Im unique, but I know that I just dont know when to shut up, or how to conduct myself sometimes, so I say weird things. And when I tell of my past, it just spills out when I least expect it, and its the most horrible things, and people stare at me as I try to backtrack. Sometimes I do well, and people just act like I never said anything in the first placeand we move on to whats most important. Them.
