If you can, please give money to the Hurricane Victims through the Red Cross or another charity of your choosing.
Oh God. I dont think I can look at another article about Hurricane Katrina. I want to stop watching and reading about it but I cannot pull myself away.
It is just so heart-wrenching, so incredibly sad. People who have lost everything only to survive and not have food or waterare waiting for help at the Superdome. Others are stranded across Mississippi and in small towns in between. I dont know what is worse, the utter destruction of Mississippi or the devastating flooding of 80% of New Orleans.
I cannot wrap my mind around the fact that my favorite city,
New Orleans, will never be the same. I remember all of the beautiful places I went in that city, only now I know that most of those buildings are up to their roofs in water. I think about the beautiful cafs and the Garden District and the riverfront. Im pretty sure much of that is destroyed.
I saw a man on CNN yesterday, that they interviewed. He was so distraught. During the flooding, he was holding onto his wife and their kids and grandkids, and their house ripped in half. She realized that he could not hold onto all of them, and she was sacrificed to save them. That just seems unfathomable to me. Your mate, or your children?
Of all the images that have made me tear up, I think the one that broke my heart was on msnbc.com. It was a crying mother holding her baby. The baby seemed to be about a year old. All I could think is that, that little tummy is probably empty. How would I feel if I was in that situation with my child? Yes, you are lucky to survive. But then you are waiting in sweltering heat, in the sun, with thousands of other angry hungry traumatized people, with no food or water for days on end. It seems like the help will never come.
How could you tell your own child There is no food or water, and I dont know when well get it..?
Times like these bring out the worst in some people, the best in others. But you can bet if I was desperate for food or water what side would be coming out.
I cannot blame them for being scared or angry.
You know what? If you gotta steal water, or food, or bread or diapers or baby formula, Im not going to judge you. But stealing a television when youre up to your chest in water and you have no electricity is stupid!
I just cant believe people are stealing TVs. They might even get shot for it. Aint no TV worth getting a bullet in your butt cheek.
Help is coming, but not fast enough. Water rescues have been slowed because of dangerous obstacles.
Evacuations from the Dome are complicated by looters and violence from gangs. EMTs are scared to death of these people with guns. Shots have been fired at rescue helicopters.
The hospitals are running very low on food and water and face looters who want to steal medication.
This is so desperate.
The waters are no longer rising, but they are not receding either.
People are dying left and right and there is no one to pick up the body. People are dying in the Superdome and on the street. If they are lucky, they are covered up. But the body stays where it is.
How utterly terrible.
Conditions are now unsanitary at the superdome. No electricity, so no air. If youve ever been to New Orleans in the summer or St. Louis in a typical August, you have some idea of what its like for these people, who havent had a shower in 4-5 days. Who have watched their loved ones drown and have seen their own homes disappear beneath the swirling black water?
Yes, you escaped death, but welcome to Hell.
