An eleven year old metro east boy is at the center of a controversy involving his principal. The boys mother says her son didn't deserve the punishment he got at school. He acted up, so the principal had him mopping up at the local police department.
The incident began at Neely Elementary School and was supposed to be a punishment for King Burrow. Instead, school officials and the boys mother say it was a situation handled improperly by a principal.
Michelle Rose says no child deserved the punishment her son got from his school principal. Even worse, she says is what her son was told to do inside the Alorton Police Department. King Burrow says he was forced to clean out jail cells, clean the toilets and mop the floors. An unusual assignment that came after a teacher said Burrow was disruptive in class.
He was sent to the principals office and within minutes was doing manual labor for homework. It wasn't until after the incident, Michelle Rose talked to the principal. The principal reportedly admitted she did not contact anyone before she had a police officer take the boy to jail.
District spokesman Douglas Clark says Michelle should have been contacted and says the punishment was out of line.
Clark also said it was in no way the proper punishment according to the district's policy. He says they have taken action in house and are confident a similar situation would not happen again.
Michelle Rose says her son is not a bad child although she admitted he has been suspended more than twenty times. She claims most were minor incidents that got blown out of proportion. School officials agreed to give the boy private tutoring for the rest of the school year.
So far, his mother says says a tutor has only seen him one time since the incident last in March.

Is this mother on crack? I say, if he's been suspended 20 times then maybe something drastic needed to be done. I'm sorry, there are kids at school who want to learn. Kids like this make that impossible. Maybe he shouldn't have been cleaning toilets, but he should have to deal with a harsh punishment.
