Hmmm. How to talk about this?
Well, Jackie has to do 15 minutes of reading every night for school. Tuesday night, since I had bought her a book on Martin Luther King Jr, we chose that book. We've been reading 3 chapters a night.
Jackie's in major relaxing mode. She's got her jeans on but she's not wearing a shirt because she's hot. No big deal.
Jackie was reading about racism in Montgomery, Alabama when I happened to glance down and notice that my 7 year-old daughter has SPROUTED. There is definite curvage and pointage in the breasticular (I just made that word up) area.
Not wanting to be obvious...but very concerned, I looked quite a few times.
I can't believe it but Jackie has really started puberty. I looked it up on the net, and it's called precocious puberty. She has been complaining lately of wetness in her armpits. Jackie has a stronger scent than she used to. She's also going through a major growth spurt.
Now, we have BOOBS. She's only 7, almost 8, and this is NOT fair.
It is now COMMON for black girls as young as 6 and white girls as young as 7 to start puberty. That's crazy! I got boobs at 11 and started my period at 12.
The websites, all 15 of them, tell me not to worry, that the onset of a girl's period won't be for another couple of years.
And it turns out that this precocious puberty is NORMAL. How can that be?
Anyway, she finished with the next few chapters and she put her book down. Not wanting to scare her, I did not say anything yet because I was not prepared to. Instead, I slept on it.
I can't believe my baby has started puberty. I just cannot believe it.
Last night, we had a talk. I asked her if she'd noticed that she was growing. She said she hadn't. I told her if she noticed any changes to let me know.
She cried a little.
"The kids will make fun of me if I have to wear a bra." I explained to her that even though she's had a rough year, and has had a hard time making friends, that this is definitely a time where it's good to be first.
All the while I'm hoping that I'm not lying to this child.
I explained to her that this was all normal and if she had any questions that I'd be there to answer them.
By July, she'll be in training bras.
God help me.
